Dear Neighbors,
This will probably be the last time I eat the Bacon Marmalade pizza from Paulie Gee’s, which is one of the best things I have ever had the pleasure of putting in my mouth. It is the perfect combination of cheesy-breaded-sweet-meatiness. Unfortunately the genius who makes it is being a complete dick and moving to Spain to have a fabulous life or something. Oh well.
You will be missed bacon marmalade!

  6. Second Act: Paul Giannone

Inspiring story about a Greenpoint fixture, the man behind Paulie Gee’s. At age 56 Paul left his job as an IT professional and looked to learn the tools of the pizza trade by applying for a managerial position at a local pizzeria. He was turned down, and after opening his own (now hugely successful) store, he replied to that rejection letter:

    Dear Mr. Giannone,
With all do respect, your resume doesn’t show any restaurant experience, not to mention pizza restaurant experience and the objective you refer to on your resume is to leverage your IT experience, which isn’t appropriate for our business.

The position we’re looking to fill requires experience in the restaurant industry at the General Manager level, supervising 30-50 employees in a high volume environment. Without a doubt you have a passion for pizza. However, without the restaurant management experience, I regret I can’t consider you for the position advertised.

    Respectfully,
    [NAME REDACTED]

…Without your reluctance I may never have gotten the opportunity to spread my wings.

    Thanks,
    PG

This is a photo of Michelle Matson, a young woman who was riding her bike one night in Greenpoint. She was hit by a car and thrown 20 feet forward; the car sped off. Her skull was fractured. Her C-spine, the neck’s cervical vertebrae, was broken. Her lower left leg was shattered; the break was so severe that doctors couldn’t set the bones for a week.

When her boyfriend returned home after Michelle was moved, he found a note from the police that said they had located the car that had caused the accident. But that was the extent of the action they took to help the couple. Even though the ditched car was found within 24 hours, a 1990 Nissan Maxima abandoned two blocks southeast of the accident scene, the police would never make any arrests. And that the detective assigned to the case would tell James, as the victim has consistently recalled for months, that the vehicle owner claimed he’d lost his keys at a local bar that same night and walked home—and that without an eyewitness putting him in the driver’s seat, there was nothing that could be done.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Wogie’s, my favorite Philly sports bar in NYC, make the final four but “Get your cheesesteak with chopped-pickle salsa?” C’MON SON!
Also I may be a new to the ‘hood but I can assure you that Red Star is not “the pride of Greenpoint.”
